He served at Naval Air Station Barbers Point in Hawaii and the USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) in Sasebo, Japan, earning an honorable discharge in 1993. Leonard graduated from Florida International University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences. He furthered his education by obtaining a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2003 from New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, New York. Leonard completed his academic journey by earning a Juris Doctorate in 2009 from Florida International University College of Law
