Which Hip Implants Are Linked to Health Problems?

Hip replacement prosthetics are supposed to help patients relieve hip pain and improve mobility. Some hip replacement devices, specifically metal-on-metal, can lead to serious complications. The following metal-on-metal hip replacement implants are associated with an increased risk of metallosis, cobalt toxicity, pseudotumors, and eventual need for revision surgeries.

  • DePuy Pinnacle. DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, manufactured Pinnacle hip implants. The company manufactured the metal-on-metal hip implant until 2013 (when they pulled it off the market but did not recall the device). Patients with DePuy Pinnacle implants report experiencing chromium-cobalt toxicity, chronic pain and other complications caused by device failure.
  • DePuy ASR. DePuy’s ASR is also a metal-on-metal hip replacement device. Like the Pinnacle, the ASR can lead to chromium-cobalt toxicity and device failure. The ASR was recalled on August 24, 2010 due to a “higher than normal” failure rate and increasing amount of revision surgeries.
  • Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II. Stryker Corporation issued recalls for its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip replacement devices. These metal hip implants can also lead to metallosis pseudotumors, adverse local tissue reactions, and a need for revision surgery.
  • Stryker Accolade TMZF. This is another metal hip implant that is linked to metallosis.
  • Smith & Nephew R3 Acetabular System. Patients implanted with this device also experienced hip and groin pain, cobalt and chromium toxicity, and a subsequent need for revision surgery.

There are other metal-on-metal hip replacement devices linked to adverse health outcomes that our blog did not discuss. You can follow our blog updates each month as we discuss these and other hip implant devices in more detail.
